#4: Rex Chapman’s Shot

One of the more iconic playoff shots to send the game into overtime that most of us can remember is the 1997 Rex Chapman shot.

I say that, but I now realize that was 23 years ago, so maybe some of you can’t remember it.

Anyway, it was amazing when it happened. Some people refer to it as, “The Shot,” which I refuse to do due to its lack of creativity, but I understand the sentiment.

Down three in the closing seconds of game 4 in the first round against the Seattle Supersonics, Rex Chapman caught the inbounds pass that looked like it was going into the third row of stands, turned and heaved the ball toward the goal as he was jumping and falling out of bounds…nothing but net.

Replication of this shot would be attempted by every kid in America’s driveway for years to come.

Unfortunately, just like the Gar Heard’s shot heard round the world, the Phoenix Suns would go on to lose that game in overtime.

Had the Suns won either of these two games, these moments would have been rated higher on this list, but because fate didn’t have a Suns victory in store, they fall further down the list.

Supposedly, Chapman doesn’t like to talk about this play (he prefers daily life block or charge memes) because the team ended up losing, but it is too epic of a Suns moment to keep off this list.
