Cameron Johnson

Collection of Apology Letters

When Cam Johnson got drafted, nearly every credible draft analysis gave the Suns’ selection a grade of “D.” Or worse.

In part, it made sense at the time. While many considered Cam to be the best shooter in the draft, his age, hip injuries, and lack of defensive prowess had him projected in the mid 20s range. So, 11th overall was a reach.

However, Johnson has put together an impressive early season campaign, averaging 9.2 points and better than 41% from behind the arc.

That 3-point shooting ranks him third among rookies in the draft with qualifying minutes, and the points per game ranks him 11th, exactly where he was drafted.

When it comes to advanced metrics, Cam Johnson ranks sixth among his draft class in win share (estimated number of wins contributed to the player).

So for Christmas, I think Cam deserves a collection of apology letters from all those out there who bashed the Suns for selecting him so high. Sure, it’s still early, and I’m confident some of them will be reluctant to commit to being wrong this early in the man’s career, but if I were to ask enough folks, I’m sure I could get a handful to put in Cam’s stocking.

I’ll start with mine: Sorry, Cam. Love, Adam.
