Roster moves can come at you fast. After thinking the Phoenix Suns would pick one of three players to join Jared Harper on the final two-way contract, the Suns waived all three of them.
And the winner in the three-way battle for the Phoenix Suns’ final two-way roster spot is…
No one. Yet.
In somewhat of a surprising move, the Suns announced today they waived guard David Krämer, center Norense Odiase and forward Tariq Owens. One of these three players were thought to sign the team’s remaining two-way roster spot, but the Suns crushed the hopes of all three of them.
I hope the team executives at least gave them some cab fare with that abrupt exit.
Krämer never really got off the ground, being sidelined with a leg injury for most of training camp and all preseason. His time with the Suns will likely make a cool-trip-to-America story, as he will likely find his way back to a club in Europe.
Norense Odiase played sparingly in the preseason, and even knocked down a 3 pointer in the last game against the Denver Nuggets, but it was not enough to stick around.
The player who seemed like he was a leading candidate for the two-way spot was Tariq Owens after the rookie played 12 minutes in the Suns’ first preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, he only saw two minutes of action over the next three games, including a DNP last game due to ‘personal reasons.’
My guess is that he was told the team planned to cut him before the game, and sitting out was his form of protest.
This means the Suns will be in search of a free agent to fill its final two-way roster contract. But who is out there?
The Suns will likely wait until all the teams have gone through their final cuts before selecting someone, but some intriguing names have already been made available.
The Miami heat have been fawning over Kentucky guard Tyler Herro due to his uncanny preseason performances, so much so they waived another former Wildcat, Mychal Mulder. He’s a sharpshooter who tore up the G League last year, and would fulfill mantra that teams always need shooting.
If the Suns want another shooting power forward from North Carolina to join Cameron Johnson, then they could pick up Luke Maye, as the Milwaukee Bucks recently released him.
Then again, the Suns could ride name recognition and pick up David Stockton, because of all positions, they definitely could use another point guard. Why have six when you could have seven?
In all likelihood, the Suns will wait it out a few more days to see who else gets waived. Until then, farewell to Krämer, Odiase, and Owens.
I hope it as as good for you as it was for the Phoenix Suns.
