Where are the 2009-10 Phoenix Suns Now?
By Adam Maynes
Collins – Griffin
Jarron Collins* – After eight seasons with the Utah Jazz, the Suns signed Collins prior to the 2009-10 season where he played a minimal role over 34 regular season games. He would start in 10 playoff games, however, although he was not re-signed following the Western Conference Finals. Collins would play for the Clippers and Portland the following season before retiring, eventually becoming an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors for the past four years.
Goran Dragic – In only his second season, backup point guard Goran Dragic played an integral role in the Phoenix Suns sweeping the San Antonio Spurs in the Conference Semifinals, including a huge 26 point game three, including 23 fourth quarter points to put the game – and essentially the series – away. In an epic error, Dragic would be traded to Houston midway through the following season, although he would return to the Suns as a free agent in 2012. Eventually becoming disgruntled with the then management staff, Dragic would demand a trade in 2015 and has spent the following four-and-a-half seasons with the Miami Heat, making his sole All-Star appearance in 2018.
Jared Dudley – Acquired the season prior with Jason Richardson, Dudley had his breakout season in 2009-10, making a huge impact off the bench with both his infectious energy and 3-point shooting. Duds played four-and-a-half seasons with Phoenix, eventually becoming the team’s starting power forward before moving on to the Clippers, Milwaukee, and Washington. He returned to the Suns on a three-year deal in 2016, playing two seasons before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets where he played last season. He signed a one-year minimum deal with the Los Angeles LeBron James‘ this summer.
Channing Frye* – 2009-10 was Channing Fry’s breakout season as well, having signed a free agent contract in the summer of 2009 becoming the franchise’s greatest stretch-five in it’s history. Shooting 43.9% from beyond the arc that year, Frye would spend five total seasons with Phoenix (missing the 2012-13 season with an enlarged heart), before signing with Orlando in 2014. Since, he has played with the Magic, Cleveland twice, and the Lakers, finishing up with the Cavaliers last season in limited time, before calling it a career this summer.
Taylor Griffin* – The Phoenix Suns drafted the wrong Griffin in 2009 with his brother going first overall to the Clippers. Taylor would appear in only eight regular season games, spending the majority of his single full season in the NBA in the then D-League. Griffin signed with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2011, but was waived 11 days later, never appearing in a game.
