Jimmer Fredette

There are few players in the league that have gone through the ups and down of a career quite like Jimmer.

A former 10th overall pick of the 2011 draft, Fredette has found himself playing for five different teams since.

Now include the two and a half years he played professionally in China and you get a fuller picture of what brought Fredette to the Phoenix Suns.

Now the the question is: do the Suns want to bring the guard back after only six games at the end of last season?

Unlike the previous four players, this is a decision Phoenix can make while holding all the cards.

The team owns an option on his contract and can decided to bring him back or cut him loose, but this can be both a good and bad thing.

The good is that the Suns can take a serious look at Fredette and if they choose to cut him there are little to few consequences.

The bad is that by picking up the option it increases his salary from under $200,000 to $1.9 million.

That is a steep number for a guard that has only played 12 NBA games in the last four years.

And while just having his name on the team does boost ticket and jersey sales, at some point the team needs to see if he’s really worth it.

In his small sample size with the Suns, Fredette put up 3.7 points per game in 10.8 minutes a contest. The majority of those minutes came in garbage time and to be fair you can’t really evaluate a player in such a small amount.

The most likely case for Fredette is that Phoenix declines the option and allows the guard to pursue yet another home on a NBA roster.

NBA free agency kicks off June 30th at 6 p.m. EST.
