Phoenix Suns Draft Primer: Coby White
The Bottom Line
The question on whether to make Coby White their future at point guard rests on the direction James Jones and Co. want to go in Booker’s development.
Booker has taken significant strides as the primary playmaker every year since the Suns drafted him, slowly transitioning into a James Harden-type on-ball player in Phoenix’s offensive game plan.
Basically, every play, pass, screen and shot has specifically been tailored with Booker in mind up until this point.
A selection of White with the sixth pick brings in another aggressive backcourt scorer that Booker will have to defer to from time-to-time, shifting his role in the offense.
If Monty Williams envisions Booker as an off-ball sharpshooter, ala Klay Thompson, to maximize his value to the team, taking a chance on White would be a smart and calculated decision for a squad in desperate need of more shot creators.
If the organization plans on staying the course recreating the desert version of Moreyball, the Suns should look elsewhere, sign a Patrick Beverley-type in free agency and continue watching Booker work his magic in isolation.
Either way, the Suns have a franchise-altering decision to make in a month, and for the fans and the city of Phoenix’s sake: let’s hope they can manage to get it right.
