The Phoenix Suns have the sixth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. They’ve picked sixth once before and it wasn’t pretty.

Fans of the Phoenix Suns know all about disappointment, unfortunately. It showed up again in the NBA Draft lottery.

First overall would have been amazing. Zion Williamson is a generational talent and would have made one intriguing trio with Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton.

Second overall would have likely meant filling the hole at point guard with Ja Morant. Not a bad consolation price in the Zion sweepstakes.

Third overall probably would have been the rights to R.J. Barrett. The Suns have a plethora of wings but with the latest on Josh Jackson and with Kelly Oubre being a free agent and T.J. Warren likely being on his way out, Steve Nash‘s godson has a lot of potential.

However, the team did not get a top three selection, nor fourth or even fifth. Phoenix will have the sixth overall pick in the upcoming draft.

The Phoenix Suns have selected sixth once before in franchise history. It wasn’t pretty and hopefully this time plays out much better if they keep the pick.

33 years ago, in 1986, the team held the sixth pick and with it chose a man named William Bedford.

Don’t recognize the name? It could because you’re too young. Even if you’re old enough, it probably doesn’t ring a bell. Why? He just wasn’t that good.

He was projected as a star player but ended up being a disappointment and he became a drug addict, never reaching his full potential.

He had drug problems after he left the NBA too, getting arrested for drug possession twice and getting accused of transporting 25 pounds of marijuana, before getting arrested twice more for marijuana and given a 10-year prison sentence.

Bedford, a 7-foot center, played for the Suns, Detroit Pistons and San Antonio Spurs in six NBA seasons. He averaged a mere 4.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game in his career.

Must Read. The Suns need to kick Josh Jackson to the curb. light

Drug issues aside, he just didn’t pan out in the NBA. It’s a sad story and not what you want to think about with the sixth pick in the draft. Hopefully, if they keep the pick, this time around will work out a whole lot better for the Suns.
