Deandre Ayton for Anthony Davis to Phoenix Suns rumor is back
By Adam Maynes
Could Deandre Ayon beat the Lakers and/or Celtics’ potential trade offers?
There is, of course, also the other teams that will make a run at Davis if Griffin does begin to seriously listen to offers.
The two prevailing teams are the L.A. Lakers and the Boston Celtics as they have been the two most common and popular names connected to Davis for the past year (although do not count out the Brooklyn Nets of L.A. Clippers at the very least as well).
Boston can offer a package around Jayson Tatum, however, they may not be quite so relevant in trade discussions if Kyrie Irving walks and they might want to hold onto all of their youth, cap space, and remaining draft picks if he does choosing to take a slightly slower rebuild rather than throwing one star on a roster of role players and not having the talent still to overcome the Milwaukee Bucks (and others).
With all of the dysfunction of the Lakers, L.A. too might end up standing pat or doing something entirely unexpected in an attempt to find some modicum of stability. Obviously Davis makes L.A. a lot better, but at the expense of who/what this offseason, potentially gutting the team of all reliable role players to group with the young Davis with aging LeBron James.
Let’s say too that Irving decides to sign with the Lakers (which has been recently rumored as a possibility). The Lakers set themselves up to have cap space this summer and could then potentially combine Irving with LeBron and Davis.
However, it appears that the Lakers offered their absolute best trade last year and New Orleans (admittedly under different management) turned it down.
If Griffin does not believe as his predecessors apparently didn’t that what the Lakers have to offer is either worthy of Davis or the best he can get, then there is just no guarantee that Kyrie in LaLa Land makes a deal for Davis any closer to a reality, at least in the summer of 2019.
As I said before, I have not seen this rumor in print anywhere, however the connection(s) between the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Pelicans are too strong to ignore.
Would I make this trade? I honestly do not know – yet. My gut says that Ayton will be a really good player, and if the Suns land the first or second pick, giving up Ayton with potentially either Zion Williamson or Ja Morant (and the possibility of each of their growth’s to superstardom) is an awful lot, even if it is for a current superstar, who for at least one season, would make the Phoenix Suns really good.
