Phoenix Suns fans should be happy and the franchise got a good coach. However, Monty bet on himself in his move to the valley.

We know that the hiring of Monty Williams was a very good, if not great move for the Phoenix Suns. However, it’s far from a safe move for the new head coach.

The franchise has shown to be allergic to continuity and shown very little job security recently as this is their fifth coach in as many seasons. Williams bet on himself to come to the valley.

He’s a great man, a promising coach and he deserves to be on the sidelines running the show.

The Suns have a good history and a solid duo in Devin Booker, who would be an All-Star if the team won more games and Deandre Ayton, the first overall pick in last year’s draft. There is a lot of solid youth around them and the possibility of being able to clear the needed cap space for a max free agent should one be enticed to come here.

However, GM James Jones has no experience other than as an interim and owner Robert Sarver needs no introduction. Although, Jones may be better than expected especially since this was his first choice for the team’s next head coach and Sarver is at least saying that he plans on changing his ways.

The franchise needed a head coach that can help turn this Titanic around because it was surely headed for that iceberg, hitting many rough waters along the way. It’s one heavy task, though, and it’s no doubt a very risky move for a man that was a very popular name in the coaching market. Phoenix presents some serious challenges.

Next up for Monty includes getting this once respected franchise away from rebuilding mode and back to competing. While the Suns have sat still in turmoil as one of the worst teams in the league over the last several years, other teams like the Sixers, Nets and Kings have returned to the post season.

It all starts with the right coach and it is being noted league wide that Williams is expected to be that guy. Now it’s on Jones to continue to strengthen the structure around him. Bringing in Jeff Bower, with all his experience, was a good move and that will help. Doing whatever he did to Sarver that got him to apologize for his errors and say he’ll change is another huge step.

A lot needs to change for him to be successful but Monty Williams bet on himself when he chose to come to the Phoenix Suns. The franchise must understand that he’s all in.
