Gregg Popovich
This isn’t a name you expected but it’s one that actually makes a lot of sense. He is a wild card, for many reasons. A man that was the reason for a lot of heartache in Suns fans every where as he coached the San Antonio Spurs in all those epic battles and likely cost Phoenix several runs at the Finals back in the day, if not titles.
Another reason is just that, he’s a head coach right now. His contract is up at the end of the season though and he’s given serious consideration into moving on from being a head coach. However, if a team was to offer him a front office position he may take a crack at that. He’s very smart, extremely well spoken and has a lot of respect around the league.
Sarver would 100 percent have to stay hands off and let the man do his job but as hands on as Robert is, I don’t think that would be an issue if they managed to bring in someone of Pop’s stature.
His recent quote after the Suns lost to the Spurs on a buzzer beater resonated with fans. “Phoenix got robbed.” He was of course speaking just to that game and how hard the team played in comparison to his team but I don’t think I’m the only one that watched those old games, including that Robert Horry hip check, and then that quote. That touched home.
As much as I absolutely hate the Spurs because of the glory days and how much they were in the Suns way from something truly special and magical, I have SO MUCH respect for Poppovich and I would truly enjoy having him run this front office. I wouldn’t even mind seeing him run for president if you listen to his thoughts and watch his demeanor. He’d have my vote.
Those are 10 candidates that the Phoenix Suns should at least interview for the open full-time general manager position. Who ultimately gets the job is anyone’s guess but I hope they at least find a way to contact each and every man on this list about it.
