Even as the Phoenix Suns number one overall pick, Deandre Ayton still has areas he should focus on improving as his New Year’s resolution.

Coming in as the number one overall pick for the Phoenix Suns, Deandre Ayton should have less to work on than most rookies. But just like any other player there are places Ayton should specifically work on improving in the new year.

While going into the new year on a positive note, every member of the Phoenix Suns still has things to work on going forward, and the number one pick is no exception. Unlike many people, one resolution Ayton will not need is to spend more time in the gym improving his body.

Ayton will still need some workouts, although they should be focused on his mental game. He needs to come into each game with a mindset that he will dominate on both ends, because the reality is he can dominate almost every aspect of the game, which we have seen in flashes so far this year.

A step forward for Ayton would actually be to have a few games soon where he is in foul trouble because he is being super aggressive and a little reckless. After that, it will be easier for him to control where and when he chooses to be aggressive and when it is worth the risk of getting a foul call.

It is probably popular among fans for Ayton to expand his range above the three point line. While in no way do I disagree with this, I understand the thought process the coaches are using, especially with Ayton’s timid temperament at some points.

Ayton has shown so far he can step out and hit 15-17 foot jump shots with decent consistency, which should make it easier and make him more confident when he does begin to shoot 3’s in the near future.

Ayton has the current skills to do nearly anything on the basketball court, his passing and rebounding are elite for a seven footer at his age, and he is uber efficient. Which is why it makes sense that most of his problems can be solved by improving his mental game, getting the right mindset, and perfecting his timing.

Next. The Phoenix Suns should not make a big trade this season. dark

If Ayton can flip a switch in his mind to attack and believe in himself for the new year, his play could progress to a scary good level for a 20 year old.
