Shooting Guard
Primary Starter: Devin Booker
Primary Reserve: Troy Daniels
Secondary Reserve: Davon Reed
Obviously Devin Booker is the starting shooting guard for the Suns this season, the only position that is unarguably locked down.
Booker will also get so many minutes that it almost doesn’t matter who they have backing him up. Phoenix could add me to the roster and even I couldn’t screw up that much in the few moments that Book is off the court.
Backing him up should also be a veteran, and while Davon Reed looked nice in the Las Vegas Summer League, keeping the primary rotations as veteran laden and proven as possible will lead to the most opportunities to win.
At the moment, Troy Daniels is that player best suited to back Booker up.
While we would all like to see Reed succeed, and if he could end up shooting 3’s in the NBA at a clip similar to what he did at the University of Miami (Reed shot 39.5% from beyond the collegiate arc in 512 attempts), then ultimately his defensive ability will make him a better player than Daniels.
However, Daniels is a proven 3-point shooter with veteran experience and leadership abilities.
There is another primary reason that he is optimal as primary shooting guard in the second unit: he needs to be playing next to a particular small forward.
