Way too early predictions for the 2018-19 Phoenix Suns

Tyson Chandler

Tyson Chandler has one year left on his contract, and while he has said nothing of retirement, his career in Phoenix will be over this coming season – if it even continues with the Suns through 2018-19.

My bold prediction for Tyson will be that he will be traded at some point before the trade deadline.

Whether a deal comes up before the season begins or by the trade deadline, it is unlikely that the Suns will be in the hunt for a playoff spot, and if he is eying retirement at the end of this year, then he might want one last shot at a ring before he calls it a career.

The question is though: what can the Suns get for him?

Unfortunately, not a lot. Even though he will likely be a relatively hot commodity as a backup center for a team looking to add veteran depth (could Houston call at some point?), those teams won’t be willing to give up the kind of young talent or first round picks that the Suns have been stockpiling for so long.

If McDonough is able to wheel and deal and land a player in return that can help, especially with the addition of Richaun Holmes meaning the team’s depth won’t be terribly hurt by the loss of Chandler, that would be a plus.

However, even if McDonough is only able to squeak out a late first round pick or a couple of seconds, anything can help for a team who will be looking beyond Tyson Chandler in the summer of 2019.
