Bring in a point guard

While Devin Booker is certainly capable as a ball handler, pairing him with a true point guard should absolutely be a priority for the Suns this offseason. And while Brandon Knight is still on the roster, there’s no guarantee about his health or ability coming off an ACL injury.

The team selected Elie Okobo with the 31st pick in the draft, but handing the keys over to a rookie full-time could be a risky proposition. Point guard is the most difficult position for a player to come in and excel at right away. Okobo will struggle, and the Suns need someone that can be consistent and help find the other starters for good looks.

Guys like Marcus Smart, Fred VanVleet, and even Rajon Rondo have all been linked to the Suns, and each would bring a different skillset to the team. Smart plays tough defense, VanVleet is a solid scorer, and Rondo is one the league’s best passers. But any of three would be well suited for a primary ball handling role.

The Phoenix Suns should make it a point to bring in a quality point guard in free agency. This would hold the team over until Okobo has more experience under his belt, and it would give him a mentor to help learn the complicated position. Being able to focus on scoring would also help Devin Booker’s development.
