DeAndre Ayton will be the Phoenix Suns’ first overall pick
By Adam Maynes
On June 21st, when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver steps to the podium to announce the Phoenix Suns’ first overall pick, he will be announcing the selection of University of Arizona superstar canter, DeAndre Ayton.
If there was any doubt in your mind, or if you were personally still holding out hope that Luka Doncic might be the Phoenix Suns’ first overall pick, you can officially brush aside all thoughts that do not focus on DeAndre Ayton, because we can now say with all certainly that the University of Arizona center and not the Slovenian guard, will be selected first overall on June 21.
That being said, what has been touted as a competition between Ayton and Doncic since the Suns landed the first overall pick, has never really seemed to be much of one. Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough has stated that he didn’t know who was going first, he has worked out many of the top players in the draft, and he hired the head coach of the Slovenian national team, Igor Kokoskov, who is Doncic’s head coach, and who said nothing but glowing things about his star guard.
And yet it has long appeared that Ayton would be the guy that McDonough would select first overall, he just didn’t want to pigeon-hole himself into that selection too early, allowing agents of other players to avoid their clients from working out for the Suns, and Association’s general manager’s from calling him with offers on the pick.
Having worked out a number of potential top picks already, it was announced in the evening of Tuesday June 5, that Ayton would be working out with the Suns – alone – on June 6.
This event, which could almost be called a spectacle, has now taken place and has given fans throughout the Valley of the Suns notice of who will be taken first overall:
DeAndre Ayton.
Following his workout, Ayton stated as much himself, saying:
How can we be so sure?
Because he’s also not going to work out with any other teams.
Did LeBron James work out with anybody other than the Cleveland Cavaliers? Nope.
Did Anthony Davis work out with anybody other than the New Orleans Pelicans? Nope.
As Al McCoy likes to say (and hopefully will be saying a lot more in the near future), “you can put this one in the ‘ol deep freeze.”
While we have to wait until a few minutes after 4pm Arizona Time on June 21, to hear the words pre-quoted in the above Valley of the Suns tweet, do not stop yourself from letting your mind wander. Think of what the Phoenix Suns will look like next year with DeAndre Ayton, Devin Booker, and Josh Jackson running up and down the court.
Imagine Ayton potentially holding up the Rookie of the Year award at the end of the season.
Imagine how good he will be in two years; three years; five years; ten years; and how good the Phoenix Suns will have been throughout that period as well.

This is an exciting time to be a Phoenix Suns fan, especially now that we know without a doubt what is going to happen with the first overall pick.
The fact that Ayton is not working out with anybody other than the Phoenix Suns means that we can all say without a shadow of a doubt, “the Sacramento Kings are officially on the clock.”
