On Thursday, news broke that Davon Reed is another step closer to making his Phoenix Suns debut.
The Suns announced that they have assigned rookie shooting guard Davon Reed to their G-League affiliate, the Northern Arizona Suns. Reed, one of the Suns’ two second round selections and had an extremely promising Summer League, averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game, before undergoing surgery to repair his meniscus this summer.

Now that Davon Reed has been cleared and assigned to the Suns’ G-League affiliate, we will be able to see exactly why the Suns took a flier on him in the second round. He will be joining fellow rookie Alec Peters, who is currently putting up fantastic numbers on the NAZ Suns. If Reed can string together a few quality performances, it should not surprise people to see him make his way up to the big club in Phoenix very quickly.
Reed, a player known for his defensive capabilities, has the potential to bring some real production to the Phoenix Suns. He is capable of guarding 1-3 out on the perimeter. The former Miami guard has quick hands and a long wingspan which allows him to get steals on and off the ball.
Jay Triano could certainly use another quality defender in his rotation. With two undersized point guards (Tyler Ulis, 5’9″ and Isaiah Canaan, 6’0″), Triano will welcome a player who can help cover up some of their defensive deficiencies.

Obviously the Suns will want to take every precaution with Davon Reed, making sure not to rush things and risk re-injuring his knee. Still, Suns fans should be excited about seeing what this talented young player can bring to the squad.
