As mentioned, the Suns finished the 2016-17 season second in personal fouls per game (24.8) and first in technical fouls (89). While the Suns do have one of the most inexperienced teams in the NBA (with an average age of 24.7), being anywhere near the top of the league in fouls is unacceptable.

Foul Trouble

Nothing will lose you a game faster than foul trouble. Far too often key players would need to sit extended periods of time causing opponents to build up leads quickly. It was not only personal fouls as the total of 89 technical fouls was 17 more than second place (L.A. Clippers – 72). Far too often players would lose their heads out of frustration and earn themselves a technical. In addition to foul trouble, the team is giving up free points on any shooting from technical and in the penalty fouls.

The Fix

With a focus on discipline, unnecessary fouls will decrease. A decrease in fouls allows players to play more aggressively. With less fouls, there are less points given up at the foul line, increasing the team’s chances at victory.
