Re-Drafting Ryan McDonough’s five drafts
By Branden Wyss
Phoenix Suns 2017 NBA Draft
Original Picks:
Pick # Name
4 Josh Jackson
32 Davon Reed
54 Alec Peters
Overall, as far as we’ve seen in the Summer League, another great draft for Ryan McDonough.
Josh Jackson was well considered the best player available for the Suns and Phoenix was consistently discussed as the best fit for Jackson. He is a potential All-Star small forward with a strong defensive prowess – something the Suns have not had since Shawn Marion
His only weakness is shooting, but with so many other shooters on the team, it’s not a huge deal to have a player who doesn’t need as many shots. There was nothing bad to say about this pick, and there still isn’t.
The only way to mix this up that would have made the draft absolutely phenomenal would have been if McDonough had traded up for Lonzo Ball. I know a majority of people hate him, but he was the summer league MVP and made every single player around him better.
He was just as good as advertised and more. A longer and leaner Jason Kidd, which, would have been perfect to pair with Booker to make one of the scariest potential back courts of all-time in a few years.
With their first selection of the second round, Davon Reed, however, was considered a bit of a reach. And Jordan Bell was still available and a player I’ve had ranked as a sleeper in this years draft.
One of the best college defensive players who also posted a 5×5 in a Summer League game (five individual categories of at least five points, rebounds, assists, etc.), which is ridiculous regardless of whether this is summer or not. A player who plays both power forward and center, this should have been the obvious Suns choice.
I don’t have an opinion on Alec Peters, nor any of the other players drafted after him, he was a great shooter as far as I’ve seen and should be a great prospect to stash in the G League. If he performs and shows the world what he can do, he could very well be a great stretch four to have, the most coveted position in the modern NBA.
Result:
4th overall: Josh Jackson
32th Overall: Jordan Bell
54th Overall: Alec Peters
