Steve Nash winning with the Golden State Warriors as a part of the staff gave me a small exciting feeling. If nothing else, it was the only thing that matters: Showing some appreciation as a fan wouldn’t hurt.
I started to watch basketball about a decade ago after barely being a sports guy in general. So one of the sports I gave a shot so basketball. I decided to watch a random game where the Suns happened to be playing.
Being young and gullible, I was swayed easily by watching those Suns teams who looking back on were fun to watch in general. Seeing Nash dish out dimes, getting to the rim with ease, and hitting pullup threes was a sight to see.
From a basketball standpoint, he is one of the main guys I look up to. I would try to wear his jersey number for organized leagues every chance I could. Even tried to convince my middle school coach to “run the same offense!” the Suns ran. And when receiving my first pair of sports jerseys, an orange Nash Suns jersey was one of the two.
As I grew older, so did Steve, which means his time as a player was waning. When Nash joined the Lakers in 2012, many thought this would be his best chance at winning a championship adding to his already hall of fame career. Unfortunately for him, it never came to fruition. After the 2014-15 NBA season, Nash called it a career and shortly after, started working with the Warriors.
No matter how you feel about the Warriors, we can all agree that Nash finally being rewarded with a ring is a great moment. Watching Finals MVP Kevin Durant and Nash embrace each other near the locker room after the Finals was a feel good moment. Considering the two work together a lot.
There are other things that can be said about Nash personally that’s within high regard, specifically his off-court ventures. Always involved in charity work including the Steve Nash Foundation. Becoming a global ambassador to the game and having a solid eye for business ventures such as being one of the few owners of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
All in all, my appreciation for him isn’t an understatement. I’m proud that he represented the Suns well, continues to work hard in whatever he does, and without him, I may not even be writing for Valley of the Suns. Who knows!
By helping players on the Warriors play to their standards, he’s finally got that ring.
And not only does the Suns future appear bright, so does the finger of a two-time MVP.
