How This Effects the Suns’ Offseason Plans

If the Suns do miss out on the opportunity to sign Millsap, then their reaction will most likely go in one of two ways:

They look to sign another big name, ie. Blake Griffin, or they choose to supplement the roster with short-term mid-level veterans with low ceilings to essentially stay the course and focus on continuing the rebuild from within. (There is the third option of seeking improvement through trade, although it would appear that unless a young player with star qualities falls into their lap at a bargain rate, any trades the Suns make will be angled to relieve cap pressure by moving one or multiple contracts in Brandon Knight, Tyson Chandler, and/or Jared Dudley.)

If the Suns were to make a run at Blake Griffin – and he stayed healthy – they would be getting a star player in his prime, and at this point would almost guarantee a succession of playoff runs beginning next season. On the flip side though, if his injury history followed him to Phoenix, then the Suns would be saddled with a large contract that might take an act of Congress to move, which would mean they are stuck with it for the duration.

On the other hand, if Ryan McDonough stood pat and only made minor moves that did not dramatically re-shape the roster Marquese Chriss and Dragan Bender, specifically, would not be land-locked with a free agent power forward taking up space in the starting roster. They would have a chance to grab the majority of the minutes, and while there would be continued growing pains, at least they were out there from start to finish.

This could also mean that the team is not as bad as they were last year and could take a step forward in the standings anyway. There is a very legitimate chance that barring serious injury or blatant tanking that the Suns finish outside of the top five in the 2018 draft, even potentially finishing out of the top ten. If this ends up being the case (and many Suns fans believe that it very well could be) then the Suns will likely be selecting a role player in next year’s draft, missing out on those near-guaranteed star-quality players.

So, Valley of the Suns fans, once again Ryan McDonough decides to check our poll to make a decision on what to do in free agency.

If the Suns have interest in Paul Millsap but are outbid by the Houston Rockets, would you rather they made a push to bring in Blake Griffin – a star in his prime – hoping that his presence would make a legitimate and positive effect on the rest of the roster? Or would you rather they stand pat and made no moves, building on the future with the roster they have today?

Vote Yes to make a strong push in free agency

or

No if you would prefer they stand pat
