The senior guard was chosen by the Phoenix Suns with the second pick of the second round of the NBA Draft.

Initially, this looks like a strange selection. In fact, it still does. The Suns aren’t exactly lacking in guards, but this actually could be quite the good fit. The Suns needed a backup shooting guard who could defend his position well. We learned last year that Brandon Knight was not going to answer those problems as a sixth man.

Reed has the tools to be successful. Having another 6’6 guard behind Devin Booker gives solid size for defending other elite NBA two guards. He also is a decent shooter and will probably develop into a solid spot up shooter in the NBA.

Reed averaged 14.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists his senior season and increased his productivity every year of his college career.

The only thing that really brings up questions about his NBA potential is that Davon was projected to go at the end of the draft, or even go undrafted all together.

That means that McDonough had to have really  liked Reed’s visit in Phoenix if he was worth taking that kind of reach. Picking a player that early gives the impression that he believes Davon is a sleeper talent anew that he also believes that Reed would not have been available at pick 54.

I predict that Davon will carve a decent role as a backup shooting guard. He will most likely average no more than 10 minutes and five points a game for at least this year, though.
