After the recent lack of a success in acquiring the first overall pick giving Phoenix the right to draft Markelle Fultz (and so far the lack of any success to land a top three pick all together) many suns fans are wondering if Phoenix will be able to acquire any available talent to add to whoever their draft pick might be.
Fortunately this is the most fluid time of the year and more calls are made regarding trade proposals than throughout the rest of the year combined (yes I would speculate that this time of the year is even more crazy for general manager’s than even the trade deadline since right now everyone has a tradable asset). Thus the Suns can get involved in trades for more than just the sake of being involved and actually pull off a blockbuster when the right proposal is made. It is moments like these that can totally re-shape the roster in a way that management and fans could not have envisioned even days if not hours before the trade is consummated.
While Kristaps Porzingis rumors have been the hottest and more consistent trade rumors this NBA Draft season, they have begun to pick up serious steam as the league inches closer to the draft itself. In fact, there is now reports that the New York Knicks have in fact reached out to the Phoenix Suns about trading Porzinigis to Phoenix, although at great cost.
I could just hear Gambo’s laugh. It probably sounded like Heath Leger’s iconic laugh in the Dark Knight – and Gambo is also a Knicks fan.
The Phoenix Suns would never in a million years make that trade. Devin Booker isn’t going anywhere and Phil Jackson, or whoever called the Suns with that crazy proposal, knew the answer before they even asked the question.
However, Suns General Manager Ryan McDonough has now had contact and if he wants to acquire Porzingis, all he has to do is wait the Knicks out.
The fact that the Knicks were asking for Booker means that they are shooting for the moon and hoping someone has slipped into a bout of insanity for a long enough time to make that kind of a trade happen. But presuming that the plausibility of that occurring is about as likely as clones of the 1984 NBA draft suddenly becoming available on Thursday, then Porzinigis will remain available for a bit longer, meaning McDonough has the opportunity to make the right proposal and pounce.
As I wrote two days ago regarding the Boston and Philly trade, the Phoenix Suns used to make that trade. When there was a star player available, the Suns were likely to be involved. But over the past decade those trades have no longer become a reality. From missing out on Kevin Garnet to not snagging James Harden (and now Fultz), the Suns have swung and whiffed at each opportunity, time-and-time again dashing Valley of the Suns fans’ hopes that they would once again be the team to sneak in and pull off something special.
