Tyson Chandler – Traded into cap space

This valuation is more a statement on the direction of the NBA game than on Tyson. If you applied today’s salary cap to the NBA game of five years ago, then Tyson and his short and reasonable deal would likely fetch a late first round pick. There are a handful of teams that would much prefer Chandler at $26M for the next two season than Miles Plumlee, Timofy Mozgov, Bismack Biyombo and Ian Mahimni’s. Those deals all have negative value once you consider that the total available cap space will never be as high as it was last offseason and the usefulness of a center has dropped precipitously in the last year. Only a handful of traditional centers made a mark in these playoffs (Rudy Gobert, Marcin Gortat, DeAndre Jordan and Robin Lopez) but none made it to their respective Conference Finals. Supply and demand for centers is about to get out of whack.  I would take the under on any contract size prediction for Alex Len.
