1993, 27th Pick

Who The Suns Took:

Malcom Mackey, Center, Georgia Tech

Career Stats:

22 GP, 1.5 PPG, 1.1 RPG, 0.0 APG, 37.8% FG

Who The Suns Should Have Taken:

Nick Van Exel, Guard, Cincinnati – Originally taken by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 37th overall pick

Career Stats:

880 GP, 14.4 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 6.6 APG, 40.5% FG

Malcom Mackey played 22 career games. Twenty-two. I’m pretty sure Calvin Coolidge appeared in more games in the Like Mike movie than Mackey played.

Nick Van Exel is arguably the best streaky shooter to ever play the game. When he was on fire, he was on Allen Iverson’s level of unguardable. He was also a proficient ball handler and distributor to boot. Van Exel was the best player taken in the second round in 1993, and was a top-10 player in the draft when it was all said and done.
