Devin Booker has shown flashes of superstar potential at times in his first two seasons. He has a consistent mid-range game that is basically impossible to defend when he’s hot. He can post up, he can shoot three’s at a solid clip, and he can make plays for others and himself off the drive. He’s also not even legal to drink alcohol yet.
Booker has already come out and said that he wants to be a Phoenix Sun for life. For a franchise that has struggled keeping their star players and hasn’t garnered much loyalty lately, that is music to both the team and the fans’ ears. His potential is seemingly off the charts, and his attitude on and off the court screams role model and fan-favorite. He could do a great deal for this city and this fan-base, much like what Larry Fitzgerald has done for the Arizona Cardinals, and Shane Doan for the Arizona Coyotes.
However, there have been some great Phoenix Suns players over the years, and you don’t have to look farther than the Suns’ Ring of Honor to see the best and most beloved players to ever wear purple and orange. Steve Nash is perhaps the most popular player the team has ever had, at least certainly so since the mid-90’s. Alvan Adams leads the franchise in many individual statistical categories and was an integral part of the team’s success in the late 70’s. Tom Chambers had his best years of his careers here and is still a part of their TV broadcast team today. The Ring also boasts the likes of Dan Majerle, Charles Barkley, and Kevin Johnson in its ranks as well.
Devin Booker still has a very long way to go before his name can be in the conversation for the Ring of Honor, much less the “Greatest Sun of All Time.” With that being said, I think that he could one day be in that conversation. For that to happen though, he will need to accomplish several feats first.
