1986, 6th Pick

Who The Suns Took:

William Bedford, Center, Memphis

Career Stats:

238 GP, 4.1 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 0.5 APG, 41.6% FG

Who The Suns Should Have Taken:

Mark Price, Point Guard, Georgia Institute of Technology – Originally taken by the Dallas Mavericks with the 25th overall pick

Career Stats:

722 GP, 15.2 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 6.7 APG, 47.2% FG

The draft was relatively weak in 1986, with several above-average players, but no superstars and not a lot of depth. Bedford didn’t play for very long, and didn’t do very much when he played. Mark Price, on the other hand, was a sniper from three-point range and the free throw line, and was basically halfway between Steve Nash and Steve Kerr. He had range, he had passing and ball-handling skills, and he was the clear pick for the Suns here in hindsight.
