1984, 13th Pick

Who The Suns Took:

Jay Humphries, Guard, Colorado

Career Stats:

788 GP, 11.1 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 5.5 APG, 47.6% FG

Who The Suns Should Have Taken:

John Stockton, Point Guard, Gonzaga – Originally taken by the Utah Jazz with the 16th overall pick

Career Stats:

1504 GP, 13.1 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 10.5 APG, 51.5% FG

Humphries was a decent guard in the league. He played 11 years, put up double digits in scoring over his career, and averaged five and a half assists per game as a combo guard. However, John Stockton is arguably the greatest “true” point guard to ever play the game. While other point guards may have been more dynamic, Stockton was consistently great and he had one of the longest (and healthiest, he played in 98.6% of a possible 1,526 games over 19 seasons) careers in NBA history. He is the all-time assist man, and was also a great defender and shooter. This re-pick is a no-brainer as he Stockton would have made the Suns a perennial playoff team at the helm.
