1977, 5th Pick

Who The Suns Took:

Walter Davis, Small Forward/Shooting Guard, North Carolina

Career stats:

1033 GP, 18.9 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 3.8 APG, 51.1% FG

Who The Suns Should Have Taken:

Bernard King, Small Forward, Tennessee – Originally taken by the New Jersey Nets with the 7th overall pick

Career stats:

874 GP, 22.5 PPG, 5.8 RPG, 3.3 APG, 51.8% FG

Walter Davis was by no means a bad pick for the Suns. He scored the second most points out of anyone in the ’77 draft and still holds the record for most points in a career for the Phoenix Suns. However, King scored the most from his draft class, despite playing more than 150 fewer games in his career. King is famous for his scoring performances throughout his career, and similar to Alex English in Part 1 of this article series, King was one of the best pure scorers of his generation.
