Dragan Bender

3.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.5 blocks, 12.7 minutes per game

Bender has had mixed reviews so far during his rookie campaign. Drafted with the 4th overall pick can carry some unnecessary pressure. He was drafted as a project. The 7’1″ Croatian was only 18 on draft day making him the youngest player in the NBA. What makes Bender special and why he had 4th overall potential was his versatility and athleticism for a 7-footer.

Bender has the ability to guard either big man position as well as the occasional small forward. His 7’4″ wingspan along with his speed allows him to cover multiple positions and gamble on steals and blocks.

On offense he is still very much raw. As of right now he is only utilized as a spot up shooter or a pick and pop situations.

Bender’s best game of the season came the day after Christmas against Houston. He recorded 11 points, 13 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks in 27 minutes. It was a great overall performance that showcased what kind of switch army knife player Bender might turn into.

Bender is currently out with an ankle injury which most likely will shut him down for the rest of the season. Even if he becomes healthy before the season closes out, Phoenix might choose to “process” Bender and shelf him while developing him in the background. Bender has so much potential but this season left much to be desired.
