Here are two names you wouldn’t expect to top Amar’e Stoudemire: Clifford Robinson and Tony Delk.
While Delk did actually top Stoudemire’s 50, Robinson only tied him. However, since he did it first, I’m giving Cliff the advantage.
Somewhat surprisingly, Robinson’s three made three pointers are the most by any Suns’ player in the top 10. He shot 17 of 26 from the field, 3 of 5 from three, and 13 of 15 from the free throw line.
With eight rebounds, four assists, and zero turnovers, Robinson had a complete game. The Suns won the game 113-100, with nobody else on the Suns break 15 points.
Robinson was 33 at the time, the oldest player on this list by more than two years. He would average 16.4 points per game with the Suns over four seasons.
This was an unexpected outburst, but Robinson had been a proficient scorer throughout his career, averaging over 20 points per game for three straight seasons.
Tony Delk‘s 53 point performance is unique in that the guard did not have a single assist or three-point make on the night, the Phoenix Suns lost the game, and it went to overtime.
It is also remarkable that Delk scored 53 in a game given that his career average was just 9.1 points per game in 21.5 minutes. If you search Google about this game, nearly every post is referring to how improbable this was. Here are the highlights with a title that might make Delk sad.
I guess it isn’t too bad to be the most unlikely of a group like 50-point scorers.
Those highlights for Delk are pretty amazing. For one night, he absolutely killed in mid-range. There are even some very deep two point shots in there.
Tony Delk was part of the trade that got the Phoenix Suns Joe Johnson. Combine that with a 53 point game, and he is a legend in my books.
