Mike James

It seemed like a toss-up between Mike James and Mickey McConnell to get the starting job once it became blatantly obvious that McNeal needed to be demoted. James got the position, and even though he hasn’t blown anyone away with his numbers as a starter, that might be because the last two games turned into blowouts early in the second half.

James is averaging 7.5 points, 3.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game overall at Summer League, and he’s also shooting exactly 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range.

He earned the starting gig after putting up 10 points, six assists and four rebounds in Phoenix’s second Summer League game, and though he’s a tad undersized at 6’1″, James is lightning quick and possesses surprisingly explosive athleticism.

James makes some pretty poor decisions at times, almost as if he’s made up his mind about what he wants to do beforehand and sticks with it no matter what, rather than taking what the defense gives him. But when he’s reading the defense and using his speed to beat defenders off the dribble, this Eastern Arizona alum showcases some pretty impressive playmaking ability.

Right now, my vote for a training camp invite between James and McConnell would probably go to James, but it’s close. In any event, most would agree that both Summer Suns point guards deserve a chance to build on their Vegas success at training camp.
