Potential Fit

The potential fit of this year’s draft choices is getting increasingly more difficult to peg. Not only are there rumors that the Suns could trade Eric Bledsoe to the New York Knicks for their No. 4 pick, but Phoenix also has the assets to make a Godfather offer to the Sacramento Kings for DeMarcus Cousins, who is reportedly being ousted by head coach George Karl.

Bearing in mind the potential for a blockbuster deal that could change the entire roster, let’s start with the basics: it’s always nice to draft a local guy.

  • “Chills,” Williams said about donning the Suns’ colors. “Because you grow up watching these guys and they’re your hometown, so just to be able to work out in front of them and possibly try and develop a relationship and get picked up by them, it’s something that’s very special.”

Selecting a Phoenix native is a nice story, but the real asset here would be the boost Williams can provide on the glass coming off the pine. He’d have to really work to tailor his offensive game to the NBA, especially since he can’t spread the floor as a pick-and-pop threat.

But depending on who’s available at No. 44, Alan Williams might be worth taking a chance on, especially for a team that badly needs frontcourt depth. Someone like Robert Upshaw or Larry Nance Jr. represents a superior option, but if they’re both off the board, the Suns might take a big man like Williams who can at least do the bare minimum.

(I’d mention that it also depends on who the Suns take at No. 13, but let’s be honest: no one has any idea what on earth Phoenix is going to do in the first round at this point.)
