Boogie’s Value

For those who have been living under a rock for the last year, finding a way to trade for DeMarcus Cousins would be a coup for the Phoenix Suns. They have plenty of young, attractive assets comprising their core, which means they could take the patient approach, let those younger guys develop and hope that the opportunity to trade for a star comes along…or they could take advantage of this opportunity to trade for a star right here, right now.

There’s no other way of slicing it: DeMarcus Cousins could very well be the best center in the NBA. He’s only 24 years old, his defense has vastly improved and he’s coming off a season in which he averaged 24.1 points, 12.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.5 steals per game — ALL career highs.

Per Basketball-Reference, the only players in NBA history to put up a 24-12-3-1-1 stat line over the course of a season are Boogie, Hakeem Olajuwon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Kevin Garnett, David Robinson and Bob McAdoo. Considering those guys are all in/going to be in the Hall of Fame, there is no question about DeMarcus Cousins’ superstar potential.

Superstars win titles. The Phoenix Suns do not have a superstar, and Eric Bledsoe — the team’s best player right now — is not capable of becoming that superstar, as we already covered this morning. Therefore, logically speaking, no one on this roster should be off limits in a potential DeMarcus Cousins trade.

Of course, Phoenix would prefer to keep Bledsoe in the event of a trade for Cousins, since the two former Kentucky Wildcats are friends. Doing so would make Boogie happy, it would give the Suns a terrific second option and, hopefully, Cousins would finally get the chance to trust his head coach again by playing for a player’s coach in Jeff Hornacek.

But Brandon Knight is also a former Wildcat, so again, whatever it takes to get the deal done should be done. The question you’re probably wondering right now is, what would it take for the Suns to snag Boogie from Sacramento?
