Weaknesses

Vaughn is bursting with that highly vaunted “upside” buzzword despite already being pretty well developed, but he does have some red flags as well. With a 6’7″ wingspan, he doesn’t have great length for the pros and even though we’ve been praising his scoring ability, it’s worth pointing out that he wasn’t particularly efficient in college.

  • He probably deserves a little leeway there since he’s only 18, but even with a respectable three-point percentage of 38.3 percent, he was still a tad inconsistent with his long range shot leading up to a meniscus tear in mid-February that ended his season.

Ford says Vaughn’s Santa Monica revelation eased any doubts about that knee injury, but his shot selection and lack of discipline are things that will take time to improve. Vaughn looks the part of a future star, but unfortunately, that also includes a lack of consistent intensity and focus on the defensive end, something that permeated throughout UNLV’s roster.

With his shot selection border-lining on selfishness at times, there are questions about his ability to co-exist in a team environment, even if he does have the potential to be an exceptional scorer.

Finally, Vaughn really needs to improve his free throw shooting. Despite getting to the line so often in college, he converted only 69.4 percent of his attempts from the foul line. If he wants to develop into an elite scorer, he’ll need to be able to make the most of his trips to the charity stripe.
