Strengths

With a massive 7’4″ wingspan and 9’1″ standing reach, Harrell’s long arms help him make up for his lack of elite size at the power forward position. He’s incredibly athletic and can jump out of the building, but it’s his strength and toughness that make him such a beast on the boards.

Harrell doesn’t mind banging bodies in the paint and he’s physical in the post on both ends of the floor. He’s a gritty, strong defender who owns the glass and after securing a defensive rebound, loves to run the floor and out-hustle other bigs down the court.

A regular target of alley-oops in transition, Harrell has a decent post game as well. That offensive ability from the low block probably won’t translate to the next level against bigger defenders who can use their superior height and/or equivalent strength to hold their ground, but Harrell uses his motor to finish around the basket.

According to Draft Express, Harrell converted 65 percent of his shots at the basket this season, an excellent mark for someone so undersized. However, his potential value as a pick-and-pop threat is what really makes his draft stock stand out.

Harrell has a decent midrange shot and even started experimenting with a three-point shot in his final season at Louisville. He only made 24.3 percent of the 1.1 three-point attempts he took per game, but if he can perfect his midrange shot at the next level, it will only be a matter of time before his range extends back to the NBA three-point line.

He may be undersized, but Montrezl Harrell has the potential to become a poor man’s Draymond Green between his ability to defend, his high-powered motor, his rebounding ability and his midrange game that has the potential to make him a two-way stretch-4.
