Brandon Ashley

Ashley, a local prospect from the University of Arizona, projects as a second round pick in this year’s draft. He averaged 12.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game this season on 51.4 percent shooting, but it’s his defense that stood out for McDonough at Wednesday’s workout.

“Brandon’s very skilled, he’s a good shooter for that size, he has a good feel for the game,” he said. “He and Christmas matched up today and we had some good positional battles. I think he has a true position in the NBA at the 4, that stretch-4, that playmaking 4.”

Ashley needs to get stronger and there have been questions about his motor and his toughness, but he’s more than aware of the importance of bringing the effort on the defensive end.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, you could be the main guy on the team or the last guy off the bench, if you’re not playing defense, you’re not gonna play,” he said. “Coach did a great job teaching us all the things we need to know and it’s definitely helped with this transition to the next level.”

Ashley is the kind of long, athletic power forward that the Suns could have their eye on when the 44th pick of the draft rolls around (provided Ashley is still available). But Ashley said no matter where he ends up, now is the time to start making a name for himself outside of his playing days with the Wildcats.

“I just want to be picked up,” he said. “What I’m hearing is I could go anywhere from the late first to mid-second, so hopefully I can be a first-rounder. If not, I’m just looking forward to the opportunity to play, to showcase my skill set and prove myself at the next level, so regardless of where I go I’m blessed to be in the situation I’m in.”
