3. Choose a player below Booker the Suns should take instead and argue why.
Schall: In this draft Kaminsky’s gone so I’m rolling with Tyus Jones. I know, I know, no one wants this again, but the national championship game made me a believer. Against a stingy Wisconsin team, Jones did his best Chris Paul impression, dropping 19 points in the second half and upping the ante with every ridiculous shot he hit. Jones just has a certain “it factor.” I’m well aware that term has been dropped on many a bust, but even without elite athleticism I can’t imagine Jone’s shot making and intelligence not translating to the next level.
Chasen: Wellllllllllll, not to totally disregard the instruction that was just provided, but I think Kelly Oubre Jr. is an incredibly intriguing prospect for the Suns. Now, obviously in the mock draft, he was taken one spot ahead of where the Suns picked, but he’s a guy whose game PERFECTLY fits the NBA level. His strengths are his length, slashing potential (especially off a fast break), shooting, defense and rebounding for his position… That’s the NBA game right there. If he can develop in those areas, he could be special. I also have an affinity for Sam Dekker and Myles Turner, but I’m not quite sure the Suns would do better with them over Oubre.
Hann: Bobby Portis, power forward from Arkansas. Standing at 6’10 and weighing 240 pounds, Portis compares to Greg Monroe on NBAdraftnet.com. He has a great mid-range game, can rebound the ball at both ends of the floor (particularly well on the offensive glass), has quick feet on defense and can even handle the basketball. While he isn’t a great athlete or much of a shot blocker, Portis already has an NBA ready body and rebounding intangibles the Suns will absolutely need next season.
Saar: One guy I’d suggest taking is Kevon Looney. Phoenix could really use a 6’9” rebounder with length. Rebounding has been a problem for everyone on the roster except for P.J. Tucker and sometimes Alex Len. Looney could really help them out.
Harris: If the Suns are looking for a guard, I would suggest Delon Wright from Utah. He was the Ute’s key player and led them to the Sweet Sixteen. Not only that, he showed the ability to score, pass and rebound, and he is a more experienced player than Booker.
