While looking to improve the team’s roster, the Phoenix Suns also made some moves with their front office and team staff. Current General Manager Ryan McDonough was given a three-year contract extension by owner Robert Sarver. The extension will keep McDonough with the franchise through the 2019-20 season. This move was more of a formality, given Ryan’s hand in rebuilding the franchise and Sarver’s current commitment to the youth movement.

More from Valley of the Suns

The same day that Ryan received his contract extension, the team hired former Sun James Jones as the Vice President of Basketball Operations. He will report to McDonough and assist with free agency and the draft, along with other duties. James Jones gives the Suns a well respected figure during free agency talks. Both LeBron James and Kevin Love have praised Jones as an exceptional teammate as well as person. You can bet that future free agent targets will take notice of Jones and his reputation when they meet with the Suns.

Another move that the franchise made was adding Jeff FIsh as the Director of and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Fish’s resume includes work with the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, and most recently as Director of Athletic Performance for the Atlanta Falcons. Other than consulting, this will be Fish’s first time working for an NBA franchise. Fish will be tasked with getting the young Suns to peak physical shape. Let’s see how he helps Bender, Ulis, and Jackson add strength from now to the end of the season.

Like the roster, Robert Sarver has assembled the Phoenix Suns’ front office and staff for the long run.
