Archie Goodwin arrested in Arkansas on two charges

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Phoenix Suns rookie Archie Goodwin was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and refusal to submit to arrest, according to Arkansas State Police.

The 19-year-old was seen leaving a skating rink in Little Rock, Ark., on May 4 while cursing and aggressively gesturing toward another person leaving the Arkansas Skatium. Goodwin was twice told to stop cursing by a state trooper and was taken into custody, where he “tried to break away from the hold” of the trooper, according to the trooper’s account.

Soon after the arrest was first reported, Goodwin posted the following on his Twitter account.

The case has been filed in the Sherwood District Court, and Goodwin has a court date set for June 3.

The news comes after Goodwin finished off a his rookie season with averages of 3.7 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. Goodwin finished off the year with a 29-point performance on 11-for-13 shooting.

Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic was first to report the arrest.

I’m from Brazil and I really enjoy reading and folowing VOTS,
but what always kept me coming back to the page everyday were the comments
can anyone tell me what happened
VOTS is what made me even more fan of the suns and basketball
    forgive my english

  • Thomas De Wulf

    I don’t like this from my favorite rookie… :(

  • 4everis2long

I wish we lived in a perfect world where no one on the Suns ever crossed the perceived line of decency. However since the arrest did not involve drugs, alcohol, or assaulting a woman/child, I hope he learns his lesson if he is guilty of anything and puts this behind him as a learning experience.

    • EarlBlackJesusMonroe

Steve, why are you assuming Goodwin crossed any line? He isn’t allowed to respond to a person who obviously felt it necessary to engage him? Sure the mature thing would have been to walk away but the kid is only 19. On the plus side he didn’t give this person a beat-down!

      • 4everis2long

Steve Kerr is coaching Golden State now and Steve Wynn is in Vegas so I am not sure which Steve you are looking for.

        • EarlBlackJesusMonroe

The one who forgot who he was talking to.

          • 4everis2long

            You are my man EBJM

  • Salvador Dali

I know that area. Sherwood is in North Little Rock and is predominantly white (80%). I’m not saying that race has anything to do with this but I know that it is an area where young black men aren’t likely to be given the benefit of doubt either. Archie went to Sylvan Hills HS in Sherwood before going to UK.

Just as an FYI, I am white. Sherwood isn’t a racist area – as far as I know – but it is a mostly white suburb and it is in the south so I’m more than willing to not prejudge Archie or his behavior.

    • EarlBlackJesusMonroe

Sorry to burst your naive attitudes but Sherwood is a typical “White-Flight” city, most often found outside large Mid-West cities such as Chicago and Detroit. As late as 2000 the U.S. census has the “racial” make-up at 80% White. Four years ago it had only dropped to 75%.

We all know that Blacks and ice-skating aren’t usually synonymous, so I for one can imagine the conversation Goodwin was more than likely having with this “gentleman”. I grew up in Tempe, Arizona which is still over 70% White. When a Black family bought the house next door in 1980 my father was not very happy to put it nicely.

      • Salvador Dali

Have you ever been to Sherwood, EBJM? If you haven’t, don’t even pretend to know more about it than me. I used to live in Little Rock and know the area well. And the skating rink where it all went down was a combo ice and roller skating rink not just an ice skating rink. It was – and probably still is – a hangout for young people in the area. Archie probably hung out there when he played HS ball. He was a local hero but there were some people that were upset that he went to UK instead of UA which could have led to the initial altercation that brought the police into it all. College ball is all to most people in Arkansas and a top prospect like Archie leaving the state to play at UK was not accepted well.

But back to my main point, unless you’ve actually been to and spent time in Sherwood, don’t call me “naive” and think you somehow magically know more about the area than I do. If you think you know more about that area than I do without ever being there, then you are without a doubt the most pompous ass that I’ve ever had the misfortune to run across on the internet.

        • EarlBlackJesusMonroe

Oh, yeah because racism is a thing of the past and you know the true feelings of every one of the 25,000 or so White people living there.

Ice skating or roller skating? So that makes a difference how? Because Blacks happen to roller skate more than they would ice skate?

Have you ever lived on Black Hill in Weirton, West Virginia? Have you lived through the the Black riots of L.A., Chicago, and New York during the sixties?

Recently gunmen stormed Westgate Mall in Nairobi and killed 39 people. I wasn’t there but it happened.

I wasn’t in Rwanda during the genocide of the Tutsi but I’m sure it happened.

I wasn’t in the Sudan but I’m sure they are experiencing ethnic violence and famine.

I’ve never lived in South Africa but I’m fairly sure Nelson Mandela existed as well as Apartheid.

I’ve never met President Obama but I’m pretty sure he is our elected President.

Do you have any Blacks in your immediate family? Well I married into a Black family so until you can speak factually or at the very least from similar experiences, don’t respond to me with your fairy-book view of our country.

Here is a little tidbit about the attitudes of White Americans in general towards Blacks: Combining both American NBA fans and Americans who don’t follow the NBA, only half of them, yes only 50% of them think the NBA should take the Clippers franchise from Donald Sterling.

There is a reason why Blacks are disproportionately represented in our prisons. I can tell you one thing as FACT, if Archie Goodwin was hanging in the parking lot with White friends while he was still in High School smoking marijuana, he would have been the ONLY kid put into the system. All the White kids would have sent home with their parents.

The most pompous ass on the Internet? I’m surprised you could come to such a conclusion as we have never met in person. A bit contradictory to the premise of your argument isn’t it?

  • Salvador Dali

Just an extra FYI, Little Rock proper is 52.7% white and 42.1% black. Sherwood is NOT a typical suburb in the LR/NLR area. It is an affluent, mostly white area. I have no knowledge other than that which would make me believe that Archie might be a victim of prejudice but I have reason to believe that might have played a part in his arrest.

  • Hawki

    Could have been worse….
Last year in Arkansas, police “tasered” a 10 year old girl for “not going to bed”.

    • Salvador Dali

That was actually in 2009, not “last year”, Hawki. And her mother actually encouraged the officer to use the taser on her after the 10 year old kicked the officer in the family jewels AFTER the mother called the police for help. The officer should not have done it even with the encouragement of the mother and was rightfully suspended afterward. But who is the real villain in that situation? The cop who was just kicked in the nuts or the mother who encouraged him to use his taser on the unruly 10 year old after that happened?

      • Hawki

Yes Salvador….2009….I was looking at the 2013 youtube video.
I agree about the mother….why did she call police in the first place ?…..because her daughter was throwing a temper tantrum ?

        • EarlBlackJesusMonroe

Hawki, have you ever seen “The Bad Seed”, an old black and white movie made back in ’56? One of my younger sisters used to scare my mother in the same manner.

          • Hawki

Only parts of it….haven’t seen the whole movie….noticed William Hopper Is in it…he was Perry Mason’s investigator, Paul Drake.
ps…Your sister is lucky she didn’t have my mother.

        • Salvador Dali

Indeed. Why does the mother of a 10 year old need to call 911 when her kid is acting up?

      • EarlBlackJesusMonroe

The police officer of course, are you kidding me? IT WAS A TEN YEAR-OLD GIRL! That is similar to that L.A. suburb attempting to criminalize five-year olds for bullying! Now you want to criminalize mothers for poor child-rearing skills? If this “officer” cannot handle a ten-year-old little girl, then he definitely needs to find a new career.

Officers like these are the ones who are wholly dependent upon lethal force because they are too weak to have been hired as an Officer in the first place. It more than likely was a Las Vegas Metro Officer and the mother more than likely offered him sex. They have become the new “hit-men” in Vegas, replacing the old-school gangsters.

  • EarlBlackJesusMonroe

Just another corrupt police officer abusing his power. Apparently Goodwin was arrested for SWB (skating while Black). Goodwin needs to avoid those White Flight suburbs when skating down South!

    • Hawki

At least down south he made it to the skating rink…..that might not have been the case up north.
In 2012 alone, NYC police stopped & frisked over a Half-Million people.
55% of those were Black & 32% were Latino.
Of the over Half-Million stopped….90% were totally innocent.

  • Voqar

Sounds pretty tame. An embarassing incident because who the heck gets busted for cussing as someone at a skating rink that isn’t about 12 years old But it beats DUI with a bag of weed or wife/gf beating while high and drunk.

PS – I liked the web site when it looked like a web site and not just another generic piece of mobile-influenced crap.

    • EarlBlackJesusMonroe

Don’t forget the one who had his pregnant girlfriend murdered.

  • Rens Menting

Can you really get arrested for cursing? Reading what Salvador Dali is writing sounds like a Sterling matter. Something tells me Archie wasn’t the one who needed to be arrested….

  • 4everis2long

Speaking of Archie, I have said before he reminds me a lot of a young inexperienced Kobe whose game had no limit and not only was he fearless but he relished the moment. Archie will learn from this alleged minor criminal experience. There is another fearless player in this league who plays with reckless abandon, my boy Russell Westbrook. I call him my boy because D’Breezy and I had long discussions for weeks about whether he would be a good point guard in the NBA.

Westbrook brings it on both ends of the court and on offense he does not care who is waiting on him defensively. Oh he will cost the Thunder some games when he total loses his mind and shoots 30 times at 25% clip but those nights are the exception not the norm. On a night when Durant and Ibaka for the most part were missing in action, Westbrook carried the team. It is so much fun watching guys like him play. While I hate Kobe, he use to play with that same edge. Well Archie in due time is going to start giving the Valley of the Suns a ride of a lifetime in the near future because he too brings it on both ends of the court. and is not afraid of the moment or the police.

Stay focused Archie, you have stardom written all over your face.
