Leandro Barbosa re-signs with Suns for the year

Posted by on January 28th, 1:27 pm

After finishing up his second of two 10-day contracts, Leandro Barbosa agreed to sign with the Phoenix Suns for the rest of the 2013-14 season, the team announced Tuesday.

Barbosa used nine games to showcase a speedy recovery from an ACL tear suffered last season with the Boston Celtics. Alongside fellow backup guard Ish Smith, Barbosa has averaged 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game as part of a second unit that has become even more engrained in coach Jeff Hornacek’s rotation pattern this month.

The signing is no surprise with Eric Bledsoe sidelined. And even with Bledsoe back in the fold, it’s possible Barbosa will remain an importance piece of the puzzle.

If and when that point comes, Hornacek will be forced to decide on whether he will use a third point guard behind Bledsoe and Goran Dragic, who previously were splitting time as Ish Smith sat on the bench. Gerald Green’s big role on the Suns won’t go anywhere if he’s coming off the bench, though he could also push out Marcus Morris at small forward if Barbosa or Smith are seen as more important pieces to the rotation.

With Bledsoe or without him, Hornacek already has more options than most thought coming into the 2013-14 season.

    No surprise. LB gives Hornacek more options even when Bledsoe returns.

    I was just reading the Okafor’s contract just became even more valuable. It seems that it was insured and the Suns (or any other team that trades for him) will only be on the hook to actually pay out 20% of it’s remaining value.

    How can you not love this guy? His shooting has been pretty off, but just for sentimental reasons I am glad he will be with the organization through the end of the season.

    @DZ

    Read up a little bit on Okafor’s value to teams trying to get out of the luxury tax and once again McDonough got more than what we thought with the trades he made in the offseason. Okafor’s expiring contract not only will help teams clear their books for next season but also it allows us to be major players in free agency as we reach the deadline, so in essence, it can become a win-win situation for both parties involved. As we head towards the postseason, I’m sure McDonough is keen to acquire a solid player just like how the Cavs did when they acquired Deng in exchange for Bynum’s salary cap friendly contract.

    Suns jumped past Warriors last night into the 6th spot in the Western Conference playoff race. Warriors, like the Suns, lost to the Wiz last night to help cement our 1st round draft pick courtesy of the Wiz.

    I cannot think who kept bragging that the Warriors were better this year since they signed Iggy and had a healthy Bogut but I told them the loss of J. Jack was going to hurt them more than the Warriors realized. IMO giving Curry minutes at the 2 guard when Jack ran the point made them so explosive. Now it seems the onus is on Curry to run the point at all critical moments in the game. Barnes is also a shadow of himself now that he is not a starter.

    Maybe they will put it together the last 3 months of the season but today they are healthy and struggling. They need a good backup point guard bad. The scary thing if you are a Warriors fan is they are losing a number of home games.

    Keep the heat on Suns. The Warriors play the Clippers in LA the same night we play the Pacers. I would love for the Suns to secure that 5th or 6th spot for the playoffs.

    Good news Forever.

    Don’t count out the Dubs.

    Iggy can do a lot of point duty. That gives Curry a “rest.” As for our Suns? “Blur hurt his shoulder (separated) in New York. He came back for the Denver game. From that point on, while he is still not 100%, Suns have won 4 of the 5 games, since he came back. Will be curious about his confidence in his trey. That will give our Suns a boost (a la Curry at the 2.) Will be best when playing with Gogi & Frye. Make it so Jeff.
