Suns Take on the Pistons in the Motor City

Phoenix better get better at rebounding. They gave up 53 rebounds to the Grizzlies yesterday and now the Suns take on the Pistons tonight, another good rebounding team. With their super big lineup of Josh Smith, Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond and led by point guard Brandon Jennings the Pistons are not a squad to be trifled with. The Suns will have to stay focused and motivated to come out with victories against the Pistons and later the Knicks to finish the road-trip at 3-2.

Key Matchup:

Andre Drummond versus Miles Plumlee. Plumlee might have trouble handling Detroit’s 20-year-old center, who is a load. The 270-pounder averages 12.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game and is second in the NBA in field goal percentage at nearly 60 percent. Plumlee is going to have to use finesse and agility to maneuver around Drummond, who in turn will try to bang down low in the post.

What the Suns offense needs to focus on:

Get out in transition and move the ball. The Suns are first in the league in fastbreak points, but only had five against Memphis. That is unacceptable. Create disruption on defense, get out on the open floor and get easy baskets for your team.

They also need to move the ball more. While their steals which result in easy run-outs contribute to being last in the league in assists, there are other reasons. A little too many isolations can cause the offense to go stagnant during crucial spans during the game that Phoenix cannot afford.

What the Suns defense needs to watch out for:

Points in the paint and rebounding. That’s all they need to focus on. Find a man and put your body on him. Box out. You cannot let a Pistons player get near the ball un-checked or you will get burned.

Suns win 112-99 relatively easily.
