Bledsoe Needs Surgery, Out Indefinitely

Multiple media outlets reported today that Eric Bledsoe needs surgery on his right knee and will be out indefinitely.

The Arizona Republic’s Paul Coro said:

This is sort of devastating news for the Suns. They were .500 without him thus far and much better with him, though due to his lack of playing time in last years and therefore his fatigue, he wasn’t exactly the player Phoenix wanted him to be. He will be that player next year, but right now the Suns are in the playoff hunt in the West and don’t want to fall out of it.

What the Suns are really going to miss is Bledsoe’s ball-handling/decision-making on offense and his athleticism that makes his on-ball and help defense some elite. They won’t really miss his scoring, that can be replaced.

The biggest problem is that now definitely one, and probably two players (other than Dragic) need to significantly step up in a big way if the Suns are to win any particular game. This would be a great time for both the Morris twins to snap out of their scoring slumps.

We only know that Bledsoe is out for an indefinite span of time, which right now doesn’t necessarily mean the rest of the season. I’m not a doctor, so I won’t speculate, but this isn’t completely disastrous as many other players will get the chance to improve with more minutes. Also, they haven’t had him for 10 games already, and therefore already known what it feels like. Still disastrous.

What are the Suns going to do?

Well they had the foresight to sign former Sun and fan favorite Leandro Barbosa to a 10-day contract. Phoenix could sign the Brazilian Blur for the rest of the season, because no matter how good Ish Smith is, the Suns need more talent and scoring and ball-handling alongside Dragic.

However, depending on what you think of Barbosa, the Suns could use the expiring contract of Okafor, the multitude of draft picks and young assets they have to trade for someone.

We’ll see what they do.
