James Nunnally waived by Suns

The Phoenix Suns announced they have waived forward James Nunnally after he made three appearances in seven preseason games. The move a day after the Suns finished up their preseason slate with a 5-2 record brings the roster down to 17, meaning at least two more players will be released.

Nunnally, who last season played for Phoenix’s D-League affiliate, the Bakersfield Jam, scored three points in each of his brief stints. His contract was not guaranteed.

Logic says that point guard Malcolm Lee could be next on the chopping block considering he hasn’t played while recovering from one of a long list of surgeries on his knees and another on his hip. He also has the smallest remaining contract that is fully guaranteed. Fellow point guard Ish Smith is due $951,463 next season while Lee is owed $884,293.

Dionte Christmas earned a partially-guaranteed contract by joining the Suns in training camp and the preseason, and he joins Smith and Lee as the most-likely targets to be cut.

Markieff has been suspended a game for his flagrant. This is a big loss to start off the season…

What an opposing team’s scout thinks of the team.

  • Scott

I thought Nunnally would be a lock to make the team. But he didn’t play lockdown defense, and his offense was a letdown as well.

Not sure what happened to him, but it was a missed chance.

NBA TV finally had the Suns preview….they started off by saying the Morris twins were tremendous talents & were ready for a breakout season….then they extoled the virtues of Kendall Marshall….pitiful.
They asked Hornacek about those three & he deftly steered his response in a different direction & never mentioned any of them by name …if I remember correctly.
They briefly covered the pros & cons of the Dragic-Bledsoe backcourt….and mentioned keeping Gortat until Len develops.

GoodBye James Nunnally….we hardly knew ya.

Can we pleeeeeeease get a power forward? If we did that and nothing else I’d be doing backflips more than Lon Babby does when he gets extra pastrami on his rye bread.

DBreezy, Good resource on a perspective of tghe Suns. Dollinger’s comments were priceless. He essentially said Marshall cannot get by anyone, he cannot defend anyone and he cannot shoot. He referred to Gortat as a backup center.

Hawki, I obviously missed the Suns preview because I turned the NBA channel on 3 or 4 times last night looking for it. I saw a little of the Bucks and someone else but no Suns. The cast is pretty complimentary so it does not surprise me they commented about the Morris twins being talented. I personally feel they are average offensive players at best and poor defenders, though Marcus may be a little better than Markieff. Anyway both of them can be out of the league in 2 or 3 years.

Luka, You are preaching to the choir. We need a power forward badly. I hope Plumlee gets some quality minutes there this season because he is our best defender on the low block. I do not mind losing but I hate to get punked and that is what happens when Markieff is defending on the low block because he is not very athletic and does not have real good size.

While the comments on Marshall were brutal it’s not something we didn’t already know. The comments on Gortat were interesting though. You know since this summer I’ve felt that we all have overestimated Gortat’s trade value. I’ve tended to feel that a part of it has to do with him being unlikely to accept an extension when teams are being asked to give up assets for him and take Marshall. That’s still an issue, but if opposing scouts and more importantly their bosses feel the way this guy feels about Gortat, McD may want to sell sooner rather than later. I doubt he’s going to look much better offensively with this roster and how long will he stay engaged defensively as L’s pile up?

  • Foreveris2long

Yeah I too was surprised about his view on Gortat. I sense he feels Gortat is soft defensively and therefore is not the man in the middle good teams need. While I tend to agree he is soft I would not go as far as to call him a backup center. That was brutal especially when he rebounds better than all-star center Brook Lopez. Look I hope they sell after 30 days ASAP to give Len more game time experience, assuming he is healthy enough to withstand the physical beating he will endure.. Len is going to get beat early and often but it will be a priceless education for him.

Fresh from the Grand Coro, Christmas and Kravtsov are safe. According to Horny, it’s down to Ish and Kendall Marshall for the last roster spot. Kendall buyout negotiations ongoing?

  • JD

The fact that Babby was able to buy out Beasley speaks volumes for his negotiating abilities. And McD’s deal-making ability is top notch. It’ll be interesting to see how the Marshall/Smith saga plays out by Monday.

  • DBreezy

Should play out by today JD as I think it takes 48 hours to clear waivers and the roster has to be 15 by Monday.

Your words were prophetic. Good call on that one!
