With the Orlando Summer League in full swing, the western teams are waiting with bated breath as Saturday approaches and they prepare for the Vegas games and tournament.
A whole bunch of players from last year’s team are playing, along with most of this year’s draft picks. Additionally, some other players are trying to make any team this season, starting with the Suns.
Markieff and Marcus Morris, Kendall Marshall, P.J. Tucker and Diante Garrett are from last year’s official roster and are used to summer league. They are the “vets”, especially Tucker, who is a good four years older than the rest of the summer league roster, but played in Europe before joining the Suns last season as a “rookie”.
Archie Goodwin and Alex Oriakhi represent as the Suns 2013 draft picks on the roster. The fifth pick overall, Alex Len, is still out rehabbing his foot injury like we already thought he would be when summer league rolled around. He should be back for training camp.
The other invitees trying to make any team are: Thomas Abercrombie, Chris Babb, Dionte Christmas, Jake Cohen, and Arinze Onuaku.
Rookie head coach and legendary former Sun, Jeff Hornacek, will coach the summer league team, which is usually left to assistant coaches. He is getting comfortable in his new role and coaching the young guys, when the games don’t mean much, enables Hornacek to build trust in his young players.
I would predict the starting lineup as:
- PG: Kendall Marshall
- SG: Archie Goodwin
- SF: P.J. Tucker
- PF: Marcus Morris
- C: Markieff Morris
However, I wouldn’t expect either of the Morris twins or Tucker to get too much playing time because we basically know what they are going to give us and we need to see what everyone else can offer to the team.
The Phoenix team tips-off first on Saturday at 5:30 against Portland’s team which should include 2012-13 rookie of the year, Damian Lillard, and their draft picks, C.J. McCollum, Allen Crabbe and Jeff Withey.
