2013 NBA Draft: Suns pick Alex Len at #5

After a crazy beginning to the 2013 NBA Draft, the Phoenix Suns selected former Maryland center Alex Len, who is originally from the Ukraine.

Most experts’ mock drafts were blown to pieces when Anthony Bennett went number one overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Then Suns fans were disappointed when the Orlando Magic selected Victor Oladipo with the second pick. Otto Porter Jr. was picked third overall by the Washington Wizards as expected, then the Charlotte Bobcats stirred things up by picking Cody Zeller at number four.

That left Nerlens Noel, Alex Len and Ben McLemore as the best players available. That same group was thought by some to be the first three picks off the board.

One silver lining to this selection is that Len is solid, but not spectacular. He can eventually be a “better Gortat” so that Phoenix can get younger at that key position. This pick also enables the Suns to trade Gortat soon or at the February trade deadline for another player or future draft picks.  However, Len won’t be SO good next season, especially considering he is recovering from ankle surgery, that Phoenix would play themselves out of the Wiggins sweepstakes next year.

There will be more to come in tonight’s article that will include more in depth coverage of the 2013 NBA Draft and grades for each of the three picks.
