Phoenix Suns Nearing Decision On GM

According to a report by Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic late last night, the Phoenix Suns GM search is potentially down to two men, Milwaukee Bucks assistant GM Jeff Weltman, and Boston Celtics assistant GM Ryan McDonough.

While Weltman has been in the Suns GM talks for over a week now, McDonough is a somewhat of a new candidate. McDonough is relatively young as he’s only 33-years of age however he’s been working in the NBA since 2003.

McDonough is a Boston area native who began his career in the NBA front-office by working in the Celtics’ video department. McDonough then began to do some scouting work before becoming an assistant GM. McDonough has been known for his hard work in the office and played a huge role for the Celtics 2006 draft-day trade with the Suns that sent Rajon Rondo to Boston.

According to reports, Weltman was Lon Babby’s choice back in 2010 when Babby was hired as president of basketball operations. Weltman’s Bucks have drafted relatively well in recent years. The Bucks have drafted great talents such as John Henson, Tobias Harris (Draft day trade), Larry Sanders, and Brandon Jennings.

The Suns should name their GM any minute now considering the NBA draft combine is in less than two weeks.
