NBA Trade Rumors: Telfair To Boston?

It appears that the Boston Celtics don’t have the luck of the Irish. The Boston Celtics’ star point guard Rajon Rondo and quality rookie forward Jared Sullinger are both out for the season. Rondo tore his ACL in a loss against the Hawks on January 25th while Sullinger underwent back surgery this past Friday.

With that being said, things would only get worse for Boston. Former Suns sixth man Leandro Barbosa became Boston’s primary ball-handler after Rondo went down with the torn ACL but soon after the Brazilian blur suffered a season ending injury. Barbosa tore his left ACL in the Celtics loss against the Charlotte Bobcats on a drive to the basket.

So with Rondo out the picture, Barbosa out of the picture, the Celtics are now heavily reliant on guards Avery Bradley and Jason Terry to be the primary ball-handlers which isn’t an ideal situation for Boston given the fact that neither guys are natural point guards.

The Celtics have handled Rondo’s absence relatively well. In fact the Celtics are now 7-1 since Rondo went down. At this point, Boston clearly needs a point guard and here’s where Sebastian Telfair comes in.

Telfair has slowly fell out of the Phoenix Suns rotation and has lost his job as the back-up point guard to rookie Kendall Marshall. Telfair lost his spot in the rotation due to no fault of his own. Suns interim head coach Lindsey Hunter has decided to amp up playing time for the Suns young players and Telfair just happened to be one of the casualties.

Bill Simmons of ESPN and Grantland tweeted this yesterday:

“My 1st choice for Boston’s Barbosa replacement: our old friend Bassy Telfair. Quality back–up PG, great teammate, and underrated defensive pest.”

According to NBA Rumors, the Suns have indeed been shopping Telfair. The Suns are seeking a deal in which the Suns would get a second-round draft choice in exchange for Telfair. Telfair’s name has been in the trade rumors for some time now, and with the Celtics back-court absolutely depleted, they are definitely working the phone lines to bring in some reinforcements.

Telfair is on the final year of his contract and he’s set to make 1.56 million dollars this season which this a very ideal situation for a high payroll team like the Boston Celtics. With the Celtics in their current situation, a second-round draft choice doesn’t hold much to them whereas Telfair would. Telfair would be quality back-up point guard off the bench who is a nasty defender, and an improved shooter. Stick and stay with SunNGun.com for any news or updates.
