The Phoenix Suns cut swingman Othyus Jeffers from their roster on Monday which now puts their roster count to 17; 16 minus the inactive Channing Frye who will most likely miss the rest of the season due to an enlarged heart.
There are however 13 players on the Suns roster right now that has guaranteed salaries for the 2012-2013 season, and the 4 players who don’t have guaranteed contracts are Diante Garret, Luke Zeller, Ike Diogu, and Solomon Jones.
“Everybody brings something different to the table but all three of us compete,” Jones tells The Arizona Republic. “They can’t go wrong for picking any one of us. The only thing we can do is make the choice hard for them.”
It seems at this point the play the fans are all rooting for to make the team is Ike Diogu but with the absence of Frye and the injury prone Jermaine O’Neal it’s likely the Suns final two roster spots fall in the laps of Diogu and Jones.
Zeller seemed to have a great shot at making the team since he can provide the Suns with the 3-point threat that Frye provided them from the power forward position however with Markieff Morris on board the Suns will have plenty of shooting.
The Suns have a lot of options right now; they can either offer any of those four guys to guaranteed contracts or they can just give out one guaranteed deal and keep an open roster spot throughout the 2012-2013 for trade flexibility reasons.
