Jared Dudley To Take On Bigger Role

When Jared Dudley first arrived in Phoenix he was regarded by most NBA scouts as too heavy, too slow footed and wouldn’t be able to guard the quick two guards in the NBA however over time Dudley has overcame that theory. During the stretch run of the 2010-2011 season Alvin Gentry removed former Sun Vince carter who played shooting guard, out of the starting line up and started Jared Dudley in his place; Dudley’s been a starter for the most part ever since.

Overtime Dudley has developed into one of the Suns most versatile players, being able to play both wing positions and being able to guard both wing positions. Dudley indeed has had issues keeping up with the quicker two guards in the NBA but it certainly wasn’t for a lack of effort, and he was without a doubt the 2nd best perimeter defender on the Suns behind Grant Hill. During the upcoming season Dudley will not only be relied upon to produce more offensively but also taking on a bigger role defensively as he’ll most likely be asked to play the role of Grant Hill as the defensive stopper.

Dudley will be relied upon to score more points on his own this season now that Steve Nash is no longer in the picture and with his constant, steady improvement he should have no trouble during so.

Dudley throughout last season slowly developed the ability to shoot coming off screens and with his smooth high release that will be a valuable offensive weapon in the Suns offense this upcoming season. Dudley isn’t going to become a 20 point a night scorer in the NBA but he certainly has the shooting touch and motor on the offensive boards to score 15 points a night.

If you’ve been following Jared Dudley’s twitter you would know that he’s been working hard this off-season and he’s really putting heavy emphasis on his off the dribble game. Due to Dudley’s slow foot speed, and just lack of overall athleticism he’s been playing the role of a spot up shooter during most of his time in Phoenix.

Perhaps this is finally the season he finally expanded into the dribbling part of his game. Jared Dudley’s efficiency has been the most valuable part of his game and if he manages to improve his off the dribble game, scoring 15-17 points a night won’t be tough work for JYD. Dudley is relied upon not only to take on a bigger offensive role this season but also to be the leader of this leaderless Suns squad.
