Suns 2nd worst team in the NBA?

The Suns were expected to be bad ever since the departure of Amar’e Stoudemire. After the Suns miracle run to the western conference finals two years ago and now that Steve Nash is gone also the Suns have officially hit rock bottom. In a recent projection on ESPN.com of the teams in the west the Suns were ranked dead last in wins; even behind the Houston Rockets.

Assuming the projections were true it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. The Suns roster the way it’s constructed right now is certainly capable of being competitive but the best it’ll do is grab an 8th seed which means the Suns would get a mid-first round pick and once again be stuck in that no-man’s land.

I’ve been saying this for a while now, if a team can’t at least make noise in the playoffs you might as well bottom out and rebuild. The Suns isn’t the last on the list for most big name free agents but they certainly aren’t at the top and history goes to show that non-major market teams are better off trying to rebuild through the draft; especially given how cheap our owner is.

According to the projected wins of every NBA team by ESPN.com the Suns were ranked 2nd worst only ahead of the Bobcats, a projection that seems rather inaccurate because in regards of talent the Suns certainly have more talent than teams like Detroit, Orlando, and Houston; I would even argue Sacremento.

As of now the Suns have a solid starting five with Goran Dragic, Jared Dudley/Shannon Brown, Michael Beasley/Jared Dudley, Luis Scola, and Marcin Gortat. With their second unit being led by, promising sophomore Markieff Morris, rookie Kendall Marshall and 3rd year player Wesley Johnson; also either Beasley or Brown whoever Alvin Gentry decides to bench of those two guys.

If the Suns indeed do finish the 2nd or 3rd worst team in the league it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, if they grab the 3rd pick in the draft it would serve as a great trade bait for a guy like James Harden. The Suns has up to 3 first round picks during the 2013 draft, although the draft is considered weak by many NBA analysts; possibly even worse than the 2011 draft.

Should the Suns be ranked as the 2ndworst team in the NBA? No. Talent wise they certainly are better than that. However it shouldn’t be over looked that the Suns have added 7 new players, it’s going to take time for everyone to gel. The Suns are also playing in a much tougher conference with nearly every team being capable of grabbing a playoff spot including the Suns

. It’s going to be an interesting season for the Suns win or lose, with their newly acquired young talent and all those draft picks the future certainly looks a lot brighter than it did a couple months ago.
